The 400
The art of politics
As I was exploring the theater I found many iron nails from the timbers of the roof, as well as a coin that belonged to the time of the Macedonian king, Perseus. That must have been a turbulent time for the people of Gitana. The people of Epirus were divided among those loyal to Perseus and those who wanted to align their fortunes with the rising power of Rome. Four years before that fateful battle, two Romans appeared in the theater before the national council of Epirus and requested bodyguards against the possibility of a treacherous attack by the Macedonians. The people of Gitana were favorable to this proposal and offered them 400 young men. How quickly this favour was forgotten!
