The inaccessible castle
The windmill
Ancient Astakos and the medieval town known as Dragamestos (various slightly different versions of the name survive) were located on the flat-topped hill on the left-hand side of the valley that runs north from the head of the bay. The site is remarkably hard to reach and only those absolutely determined to see it should embark on the quest with any assistance they can get from local people. Ancient and medieval stonework in a very ruinous state marks the site of the fortifications around the top of the hill. Dragamestos was first mentioned in the 1220s and was successively ruled by Anjevins, Byzantines, Serbs, Albanians and Italians, before succumbing to the Ottomans in the 1460s.
