The revolutionaries
Main square
The plan resulted in the erection of elegant neoclassical homes. But before it could come into full effect, the town found itself in the midst of a revolution. For months there had been rumblings and agitations all over Greece against King Otto. The king and his wife Amalia decided to embark on a tour of their kingdom to reinvigorate the monarchical feelings of their subjects. They were sailing south of the Peloponnese when the garrison of Vonitsa rose in revolt on October 4, 1862. Soon all the towns in western Greece joined the cause, including Astakos where 200 men from the surrounding countryside occupied various public buildings. A week later, King Otto left Greece forever.
