Taming chaos
Makri grocery store
In the early 19th century the site of the present-day town was occupied by a ramshackle quay, a custom house and storage rooms owned by local merchants. The new town was planned after the liberation in the 1830s. The location was not ideal because standing waters caused malaria and numerous streams limited the land available for development. And yet this was a model town on a plan vastly different from the chaotic development typical of Ottoman towns. People worked hard to level the ground and erect elegant private residences and stores. The Makris greengrocer’s store was actually built on the shores of a stream that flowed where the street now is.
