77 towers
The Ottoman tower
This large square tower on the left side of the road belongs to the Ottoman period. It is massive and has a flat roof that served as a gun platform. The outer entrance is obscured by modern buildings, but you can see the inner entrance behind the statue next to the road. The approach to this entrance was originally across a bridge over a ditch (both are long gone). The Ottoman explorer Evliya Çelebi noted that the castle walls were impressive, intimidating, strong, stable, tall, and impregnable. He noted that the ditch was shallow but wide, as a result of the rocky soil. According to him, there were 77 towers and fortified projections along the walls.
