A castle for all seasons
The castle
As the town’s name changed, so did the castle. The earliest Hellenistic works were supplanted by the Byzantine walls, who kept rebuilding the castle until they lost it to the Venetians in 1407. The Venetians seem to have completely ignored the growing threat of artillery, so it was the Turks after 1499 who brought the castle up to date with numerous new bastions. The main entrance to the castle incorporates elements from every period of the castle’s long life. Ancient blocks (easily identified by their size and square shape) form the base of the great square tower above the parking lot. The vertical walls belong to the medieval period while the talus (the sloping face at the base of the wall) was added by the Venetians to prevent siege towers and scaling ladders from reaching the castle walls. The complex of three gates and two courtyards that leads into the castle are Ottoman constructions. The castle itself consists of three baileys and a citadel at the highest point.
