The bizarre staircase
The temple of Athena Nike
The temple of Athena Nike is an Ionic structure with four columns in front and four in back. It is set against the western edge of the bastion and has some of the more characteristic features of the Parthenon (the use of Pentelic marble, the long walls lean inwards and the columns lean back slightly). There is an altar to the east of the temple (towards the Parthenon) and the entire precinct is paved in marble. Access to the temple was either through the south wing of the Propylaea or up the small stairway you can see on the wall above the ramp you have been using to climb towards the Propylaea. The stairway is currently far above the level of the ramp, but in the time of Pericles the ground level was much higher.
