The three lanterns
Dimokratias square: Achelous mosaic
More than 5,000 residents of Agrinio participated in the resistance against Nazis, resulting in brutal reprisals. On 14 April 1944 (Good Friday) the Germans executed 120 people outside the Hagia Triada cemetery. They also hanged three resistance fighters from the lamp posts in the corners of present-day Dimokratias Square (where you are now standing). The bodies remained there all day and were finally taken down on Saturday afternoon, as the church bells tolled in sorrow. The event is commemorated in a monument near the Hercules/Achelous mosaic. It consists of a three-sided copper column engraved with the figures of the three dead men. There are also replicas of the original lamp posts.
