Papastrateio Municipal Park
The Papastratos Municipal Park is an urban park covering 13.3 acres. The land had been bought by the Papastratos family in 1918 from Konstantinos Chatzopoulos, the famous local writer and poet. Initially the area was barren except for a few small plots used for growing crops. In the late 1920s the government expropriated the park and subdivided it into lots for impoverished refugees from Asia Minor, but widespread local opposition saved the area from development. In 1929 the Papastratos family erected the Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus in the middle of the park and commissioned agronomists to plan and create a verdant park. In 1947 they donated the park to the municipality.
