French and English combined
Papastrateio Municipal Park
Herakles Papatheodorou was the agronomist in charge of the park’s creation. He had studied in the École nationale supérieure d'horticulture in Versailles, France and his design incorporated elements of both the English and the French landscape schools. The former is obvious in the serpentine outlay of the paths and the wooded sections, while the latter is expressed in the well-defined and symmetrical flower beds. In 1930 the Papastratos family erected two schools within the park’s boundaries. The buildings, located behind the archaeological museum, are notable for their modernist architectural elements (flat roof, large horizontal windows, plain geometrical lines).
