The affluent writer
Papastrateio Municipal Park
Konstantinos Chatzopoulos was born in 1868. His maternal grandparents were among the wealthiest families in Agrinio, so Konstantinos was able to pursue his literary interests without financial worries. He cut a dashing figure as a young dandy dressed in white. His disappointment at the crushing defeat of the Greek army in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 made him reject the irredentist ideals of the Greek state. He moved to Germany where he became a Marxist and translated the “Communist Manifesto” to Greek for the first time. He spent the First World War years working as a censor in Greece while publishing short stories and novels. He died from food poisoning in 1920 on the boat to Italy.
