Ιn the 17th and 18th centuries, this area was a green polder. It was very much in vogue among the well-off Amsterdammers of the times, who sought for some peace and quiet along the coast of the Amstel river. Surprisingly, despite the endearing setting, they never considered dwelling permanently in the area.The Amsterdammers still love to go outside. Did you know that Amsterdam city has an actual forest? The popular Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest) is a ‘green lung’ contribution to the to liveability in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. Its size and biodiversity make it an ideal setting for the City of Amsterdam to realise its aims in relation to green space, sustainability, arts, culture, and sports. In collaboration with partners, universities and scientific institutes, the Amsterdam Forest is giving shape to the urban forest of the 21st century.
