The diamond workers
Diamond Factory Asscher 1854
Amsterdam city has always been an open society, an inclusive city offering opportunities to those in need, an attitude that we should all honor and embrace considering its positive impact in societies.. The development of the Amsterdam’s diamond industry is an interesting example. For hundreds of years, Amsterdam has been the city of diamonds. Its history started over 600 years ago in Southern Europe with Jewish immigrants fleeing, in the fear of persecution, Portugal and large areas of Spain. Many found solace to Northern Europe and lots of them ended up in the Netherlands as the country had a reputation of being very tolerant. Rich Sephardic Jews came to Amsterdam and brought their international trade contacts with them. They were extremely influential and became the most important diamond traders in Amsterdam. They financed the travel of the East India Company and acted as house bankers of the Royal Family. From 1618 and on, another current of poor jewish refugees arrives in Amsterdam fleeing in terror Eastern Europe due to the large-scale anti-jewish pogroms. Because of the strong presence of the workers’ guilds in Amsterdam, it wasn’t possible for these refugees to pursue a traditional occupation. Since there was no existing guild of diamond cutters this was the only career open to them. It was their knowledge, skill and attention to detail that revolutionised the art of jewelry making.
