Red Man
George Lappas
The sculptures, structures and installations of sculptor George Lappas (1950-2016) investigate the relationship of sculpture to space and the communication with the viewer. “Red Man” (2004) belongs to the well-known human figures with the intense red color that Lappas worked on after the 90s. This particular piece, as all of the anthropomorphic figures of the artist, overturns the traditional statics of sculpture, as it is reminiscent of a statue but also of a mechanical construction with many possibilities of transformation. The red color is linked foremost to human existence as it is the color of blood and therefore the essence of life, giving the work an existential and ontological character.
