A church well hidden from unwanted views
Anafiotika, a Cycladic island in Athens
Open your eyes to all the churches that are diligently dispersed around Plaka. They may not be obvious at first sight but take a look at the church of St. Anargyron which is located behind you. This church welcomes the holy fire when it arrives on Holy Saturday from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Walking past this church without entering would be a shame. Take the entrance from Erotokritos street, a blink and you’ll miss it doorway which leads to the church which now stands where an ancient monastery once did. If you look around you will be able to see where the monk cells used to be and for those who would like to take home some authentic souvenirs, you will find a small shop at the back of the courtyard which sells some of the sweetest scented beeswax candles you can find.
