The Parthenon may be an imposing fixture above the city but this is an enduring symbol that has been through plenty of transformations. Here are some key moments in its history:
• During the Mycenean period, the Acropolis was a fortress which offered refuge to palaces and temples.
• In the 6th century B.C, the fortress became a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Athena.
• Later, after a devastating fire during the 5th century B.C, the Parthenon was reconstructed by Pericles marking the beginning of the golden age of Athens.
• From the second century onwards began the roman age. A new amphitheatre as well as the Agora were constructed at the foothill of the Acropolis.
• The use and purpose of the Acropolis changed hands through a series of occupations by the Byzantine and Ottoman empire.
• Nowadays, in modern times, the Acropolis functions as an archaeological site.
