The new Acropolis museum was unveiled to the public in 2009. This ultra sleek modern edifice is made of cement, steel and glass and is thus able to withstand seismic activity that could pose a threat to the treasures on display. Its colours and design were made to blend in with the surroundings making space for admiration to be focused on its contents rather that its exterior. 4000 artefacts are housed here and at least 300 are considered to be works of art. All objects on display here were found on the Acropolis hill and have been given a new life in the museum. To the untrained eye the presentation may not make much sense but the museum has been planned as an exact replica of the original hill that faces it.
