Eviction from the Castle
The Castle of Ioannina/The Gate
From the 14th century, in the narrow streets of the Castle of Ioannina, Greek Christians, Turks, Jews, neighbors who live peacefully, greet each other. However, the happy cohabitation stops abruptly. Metropolitan bishop of Larissa-Trekkes, Dionysios, a philosopher, physician, philologist, who studied in Italy and Constantinople, wants to free his homeland from the Turks. On the night of September 10th in 1611, he invades Ioannina, along with an army of peasants he has roused. His revolution fails. Dionysios, "Philosopher" to his friends, "Dogwise" to his enemies, meets the death of a martyr at the hands of the Turks. Christians lose their privileges and are expelled from the Castle. From now on, they will live outside its walls.
