Queen Vasiliki
The Byzantine Museum of Ioannina
Of the 500 women in Ali Pasha's harem, in 1813 he announces that Vasiliki is the only official one. He is dedicated to her in an unprecedented way. He educates her, allows her to be Christian, gives her enormous fiefdoms, drowns her in immense wealth and does not deny her any favors. He treats her as a Queen and she may have been the richest woman of the Ottoman Empire at the time. Here, in the Castle and Serai, he lets her walk around freely, unlike the Ottoman customs of the time. Vasiliki remains forever faithful to Ali Pasha. She leaves the Serai only after his own end.
