Silver houses
Ioannina Museum of Silversmithing
People from Ioannina put silver anywhere. Silversmiths and goldsmiths, craftsmen working with silver together with gold, could do whatever one’s mind could imagine. Earrings, collars, jewelry with bells, amulets, fairy-tale combs and mirrors, cigarette cases, watch cases. But also guns, shovels, pistols, swords, holsters in which to put gunpowder. Churches and clergy also place orders: luxurious miters, chandeliers, silver plated gospels, whereas Jews order elaborate silver cases for their own sacred texts. Samntans, which are candlesticks, water jugs for hand washing, plates, trays and cutlery are used within the home. Even coffee cups acquire silver cases, the zarfia, so that the lords’ fingers can be prevented from burning.
