A small naval battle
The Lake of Ioannina
February 1379. At the house of Protovestiarios treasurer Michael Apsara, the rulers of the country discuss the Albanians, who have increased their raids. Then, the Albanians of the Malakasea clan attack; many have already climbed the walls. Bellwether Nikolaos decides to confront them at the lake. He gives his men swords, spears, crossbows, chirosiphones and small flame throwers, and they all jump in boats. The Malakasea men fight bravely but the fiery darts hit mercilessly. Their dugout canoes catch fire, some are overturned. Observing this destruction, those who entered the walls surrender. The Serbian bishop sends them to the slave markets in Arta. The naval battle at the lake has saved the city.
