Heroic volunteers
The Lake of Ioannina
In 1912, agitation is prevalent in the Balkans. Four nations rise against the Ottoman Empire. The new Greek nation fights to take back Epirus at last. On the 26th of November, Turks and Greeks meet at Driskos, a mountain reflected in the waters of the lake of Ioannina. The volunteer corps of the Garibaldines runs into battle, led by Alexander Romas. They fight with legendary fury; amongst them a nurse, Aspasia Ralli and Lorenzos Mavilis, the poet. When two bullets hit Mavilis in the face, he feels like he is going to die. “I awaited many honours,” he says before perishing, “but not the honour of dying for my Greece”. The Greeks lose the battle of Driskos. The volunteer corps of the Garibaldines, however, wins eternal laurels for its heroism.
