Cells they were, cells they remain
The Island of Ioannina
At the beginning of the 19th century, the monasteries of the island decline and become a place of residence for prisoners. Ali Pasha, the master of Ioannina, is locked in one of those cells, up until the point when the Sultan’s emissaries find him and kill him. Nowadays, the monastic life of the island has faded; but the monasteries preserve its memory, with their strict stone appearance and the bright, colourful forms of saints on their temple walls.
