A house is born
Trikoupis Museum
The Trikoupis home was built in 1730 near the shore of the lagoon. It was among the most notable residences in town. As the family grew and prospered, more rooms were added to the initial core; the end result was a labyrinthine house with turrets and an irregular plan. It survived a conflagration in 1770, but it suffered greatly when Missolonghi fell to the Ottomans in 1826. According to tradition, one of the Trikoupis brothers had been injured and so was unable to follow his comrades in their sortie; he stayed behind and blew himself up along with other infirm and elderly defenders. In 1859, two of the Trikoupis brothers rebuilt the house in the neoclassical style. The last descendant of the family donated it to the Municipality of Missolonghi in 1992.
