A complicated affair
The Garden of the Heroes
The statue of Lord Byron was erected in 1881. His memorialisation was a complicated affair, especially in Great Britain where he was viewed with suspicion on account of his unconventional lifestyle. His remains were brought back to England in a large cask of spirits, with the heart, brain, and intestines in separate cases. He was buried in the family vault. Meanwhile, in Greece, Byron remained a liberation hero, and Greeks were eager to commemorate his noble sacrifice in Missolonghi. But the memorial was not very fortunate. Very few foreigners attended the unveiling of the statue, while the amount of flags and speech-making did not live up to the expectations of a national demonstration.
