A wall is reborn
The wall
The wall proved very successful. Despite an overwhelming superiority in men and number of cannons, the Ottomans failed to breach it, despite their repeated attempts to scale it. More than 100,000 bombs landed in Missolonghi, destroying large sections of the wall and countless houses. But the defenders used stones from the buildings to repair the defences. After the liberation of Greece, the people of Missolonghi came back to their ruined town and started the laborious process of rebuilding their lives. They used material from the semi-destroyed wall to build their houses so almost all traces of Kokkinis’ work soon disappeared. In the late 1830s, King Otto ordered the reconstruction of the small section of the wall we can see today.
