The first user

The establishment of the oracle is lost in the mists of time. All Aristotle could say on the matter was that Dodona existed at the time of the deluge of Deucalion. But we know who the first famous user was. Odysseus came to Dodona to hear the will of Zeus from the high-crested oak; he was very concerned about his return to the rich lands of Ithaca after so long an absence (twenty years is indeed a very long time to be away from home). He wanted to know whether he should return to his native land openly or in secret. A little while later, Aeneas (who was on his way to found Rome) paid a visit to Dodona with a band of young Trojans and came away with a gift of a few bronze cauldrons.
