The Antikythera Mechanism
The stadium
The stadium of Dodona was built after the theater, since the retaining walls of the seats join the porch of the theater. Every four years the stadium hosted the Naia Games, a competition in honour of Zeus. At first they were local musical and athletic contests, but the Epirotes eventually turned them into “stephanites”, meaning that the victors were crowned with wreaths. The Antikythera Mechanism was used to calculate the timing of the Naia, along with other panhellenic athletic games. They were held in October, when the shepherds had returned to their winter pastures. The names of the victors were inscribed on a stone slab inside a wreath of oak leaves.
