Fierce competition
The theatre
Theaters and oracles often go hand in hand. Think Delphi. Which begs the question; why would someone from southern Greece travel for days on mountainous terrain to ask Zeus when they could go to Delphi? The answer is politics, since oracles were not averse to interfering whenever it suited them. During the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BCE) the Spartans and their allies borrowed freely from Delphi, while the Athenians experienced difficulties doing so. This forced them to turn to the oracle of Ammon at Siwah (in Egypt) before their disastrous expedition to Sicily. They also sent envoys to Dodona to consult Zeus on the introduction of the cult of Bendis (a Thracian goddess) to Athens.
