The eternal flame
Prytaneion
The prytaneion protected the eternal flame, as well as the resolutions of the magistrates and the citizens’ council. There were six rooms with nine couches each where government officials, distinguished citizens, honored foreigners, and victors of the Naia games dined. It is also possible that the prytaneion housed the sanctuary’s archive and the mint. This multi-purpose building represented the executive authority of the Epirotes. A large colonnade was added after 219 BCE to facilitate the visitors in times of inclement weather; the pedestals that survive in front of it belong mostly to generals who were honored with bronze statues depicting them on horseback in rich military gear.
