The harbour is small and could only accommodate a few ships at a time. There were many warehouses and workshops around it. The seawalls incorporate much reused ancient material. Low level gunports at sea level were added by the Ottomans on the west quay. The statue on the west tower at the harbour mouth commemorates Giorgos Anemogiannis, who tried to burn the Ottoman fleet anchored inside the walls in June 1821 (unfortunately for him he failed and was executed by the Turks). The square watchtower with the pyramidal roof on the east tower houses a navigation beacon since 1909. Lost among the buildings to its left is the Fetihe mosque, built sometime after 1499.
