The fort occupies a sandy pit projecting into the Gulf of Corinth, whose waters washed most of the circuit. A bridge over the moat connected the fort to the mainland. The western half of the moat has been filled in to provide loading areas for the ferries, while the eastern half is a small boat harbour. In the early 19th century the interior of the castle was full of ruined structures, while as recently as 2006 the Greek army used the fort as an area for keeping abandoned military vehicles. The lighthouse atop the south bastion is nine meters tall and was built in 1880. Today it is possible to walk around the fort and enjoy a magnificent view of the Rio–Antirrio Bridge that opened in 2004.
