A monastery without a name
The forgotten monastery
The monastery is perched on the mountainside above the modern Ionia Odos Klokova toll station. There have long been reports about the presence of the monastery in this area but until the construction of the motorway only parts of the retaining walls were visible. The monastery (its name is lost) was built on an artificial terrace with spectacular views towards the Gulf of Patras in the 9th century. The complex consisted of a main church, dormitories, kitchen and dining room, as well as storage areas and three cisterns. The church was adorned with a marble floor and iconostasis (a wall of icons separating the central part of the church from the sanctuary). Today only the foundations are visible.
