She who was worthy of everything
The church of Panagia Panaxiotissa
The church of Panagia Panaxiotissa was built on the ruins of an earlier basilica in the late 10th century as the katholikon (major church building) of a monastery. The name “Panaxiotissa” is particularly noteworthy since it is extremely rare and may have originated from the corruption of the area’s name (Panaxtzi) or it may refer to the Virgin Mary’s ability to “claim everything” or “was worthy of everything”. In any case, it is a remarkable building where the architects made extensive use of bricks. They form decorative zones of multiple courses (up to five), frame the large stones (cloisonné masonry), while the elegant dome is made almost exclusively of brick.
