The winged chariot
Evinos
The Evinos is a 92 km long river that flows through a deep forested valley into the Gulf of Patras. It was named after king Evenus, the son of Ares, who met his end here while chasing Idas. The latter had stolen Marpessa, the daughter of Evenus, when the king refused to allow their marriage because he wanted his daughter to remain a virgin forever. Idas used the winged chariot of his father Poseidon and abducted Marpessa. When her father realized that his mortal horses could never catch up to Idas’ divine vehicle, he killed the beasts and drowned himself in the river. In 2003 the government built a dam in northern Nafpaktia to supply water to distant Athens.
