The cross-vaulted church of Agios Ioannis (Saint John) stands in a fertile valley south of the small village of Galatas. The church is adorned with wall paintings dated to the late 13th or early 14th century. They are noteworthy for their simple folk style. There has been some scholarly debate as to whether this church was part of a monastic complex but no definite proof has been found. The church’s main entrance is on the north wall as opposed to the customary west side. The Church of Agia Paraskevi in Evinochori (a short distance to the west) has a similar orientation so it is evident that a major local road once passed to the north of this church and the door gave easy access to it.
