The section that was finally completed (in 1891) connected Aitoliko, Missolonghi, and Agrinio, with a terminal station at Kryoneri. It was a narrow-gauge railway and so it was less-costly to build and operate. Steam locomotives brought the railcars to the quay at Kryoneri, where passengers and cargo were loaded on the steamship “Kalydona” and proceeded to Patras. During the Second World War, the Kryoneri railroad facilitated the mobilization of the Greek army and the transportation of units and materiel to the front line in Albania. Partisans ambushed a German train in April 1944 and killed numerous soldiers. The railroad ceased to operate in 1970 due to insufficient revenues.
