As soon as the boar was dead, conflict erupted. Meleager awarded the head and the hide to Atalanta, an act the other heroes considered outrageous (she was a woman after all). There was a war of words and Meleager killed four heroes (including his own uncles for insulting Atalanta. The Curetes of Pleuron attacked Calydon to avenge the death of their heroes but it was Meleager’s mother that dealt him the deathly blow. Furious at the loss of her brothers at the hands of Meleager, she placed a brand she had stolen from the Fates upon the fire; they had prophesied that its loss would mean the end of her son, so when the piece of wood was engulfed by the flames, Meleager died.
