A road with a past
Tourlida
The road that connects Tourlida to the mainland is 5 kilometers long; its construction began in 1874 and was completed in 1881. It had a transformative effect on the character of the city and the natural environment since it bisected the lagoon and established the small lagoon of Klisova (on our left as we head towards Tourlida). The road had eight wooden arches to enable water from Klisova to circulate freely. Each arch was named after its position on the road (First, Second, etc.). The people of Missolonghi soon grew very fond of this road and used it for their evening walk in the summertime until the 1940s. The road was substantially rebuilt in the 1960s, at which point some of the arches were blocked.
