New Pleuron is located on the slopes of Mount Arakynthos and commands a majestic view of the Missolonghi lagoon. The city is well-protected; the site has natural defences, but the founders reinforced them with an extensive fortification system that includes seven gates and 31 towers. Within the walls the people of New Pleuron enjoyed all the amenities and necessities of life. There was a small theater that also held political gatherings, an agora, a gymnasium, and an impressive stoa. There were also numerous deep cisterns and reservoirs, able to hold enough water to sustain the people in times of need. At the highest point was the acropolis that served as the last line of defence.
