The miracle
Church of the Archangels
The church of the Archangels was built in 1610, but the present building was erected in 1929. They are the patron saints of Aitoliko and saved the city during the siege of 1823. The Ottoman army had cut off the supply of fresh water and many townspeople died of thirst. Rather than surrendering, they decided to blow themselves up in the Church of the Archangels, where they had stored all their gunpowder. On November 8, the saints’ feast day, they gathered here to receive the last Communion and die. Suddenly there was a loud noise, as a cannonball came through the roof and crashed on the floor. Suddenly fresh water appeared and the town was saved.
