A pasha’s wife
Church of the Archangels
The marble tomb next to the south wall of the church belongs to Vassiliki Kontaxi, popularly known as Kyra Vassiliki. She was born in 1789 and at the age of 20 she married Ali Pasha, the influential ruler of Ioannina. Ali allowed her to maintain her Christian faith and was susceptible to her counsel and influence. Vassiliki was able to intercede on behalf of many Greeks and may have been in contact with Filiki Eteria, a secret organization whose purpose was the liberation of Greece. After the downfall of Ali Pasha, she moved to a medieval tower in Katochi, west of Aitoliko, where she died of dysentery in 1834. Alexandre Dumas immortalized her in his novel “The Count of Monte Cristo”.
