The ring of love and death
Pamvotida | The ancient lake
Euphrosyne Vasileiou, better known as Kyra Frosini, was a smart, beautiful, and strong-willed woman from Ioannina. Inevitably she caught the attention of Ali Pasha, but she fell in love with his son, Muhtar Pasha (even though both were married). Muhtar gave her a ring as a present, but someone recognized it as the one he had offered his wife on their wedding day. The informer notified Muhtar’s wife, who was justifiably furious and demanded from Ali Pasha the punishment of Kyra Frosini and another 16 women she suspected of having an affair with her husband. Ali Pasha was willing to forgive Euphrosyne, if she returned his feelings for her, but she refused. By the order of Ali Pasha all 17 women were executed by drowning in Lake Pamvotida. Kyra Frosini thus became a legend.
