The fugitive
Petrouvouni | A land of bandits
Petrovouni is the ancestral homeland of Antonis Katsantonis (1775-1809), a famous Greek klepht. He was born in Agrafa but his father, Yannis Makriyannis, was born here. Antonis was a shepherd but he was denounced as a herd robber and was imprisoned in Ioannina. When he was released he promised to exact revenge. In 1802 he joined a band of klephts, and started raiding the lands of Ali Pasha. The Ottomans dispatched armed units and employed traitors to capture him, but they failed repeatedly. Antonis earned the nickname “fugitive”. In the summer of 1809 he was struck down by smallpox and was captured by the Turks in the cave where he was hiding. He was brought back to Ioannina where he was executed by having his bones crushed with a sledgehammer.
