Gkoura
Syrrako | The most beautiful village
All these stories and events seem to come to life in the village’s main square. The plane trees are a living testament to the founding of the village all these centuries ago. The stone fountain is called Gkoura, an Aromanian word meaning “mouth”. The church of Agios Nikolaos houses some impressive artifacts; the presence of the patron-saint of mariners in this mountainous village is accounted for by the widespread reach of Syrrako’s merchants during the heyday of their trading activities. The introduction of synthetic fibers in the early 20th century hurt the wool trade and led to a decline in the village’s fortunes. In recent decades though most of the houses have been restored with great respect for the traditional vernacular architecture.
