The fountain of the Negro
Pramanta | The wrath of the sultan
Pramanta were born in the 15th century, when shepherds from the neighbouring community of Christi and refugees from other villages of Epirus selected this inaccessible site to settle. The village is situated at about 840m elevation near Strogkoula, the second highest peak of southern Tzoumerka (2,107 m.). Throughout its history it was the most populous village in the region; its market attracted buyers and sellers from far and wide. The “fountain of the Negro” dominates the main square. It was built in 1887 by a local stone mason; the water springs from a human head that serves as the guardian-spirit of the fountain. Local tradition claims that the fountain was built on the site favoured by the Ottoman tax collector, who happened to be African.
