Fire and bullets
Pramanta | The wrath of the sultan
In the summer of 1821 the people of Pramanta faced a deadly threat. The Ottoman army that had just destroyed the villages of Syrrako and Kalarites was heading their way. Ismail Pasha was determined to crush any sign of rebellion in Tzoumerka. The villagers decided to stand their ground, encouraged by the arrival of reinforcements from Kalarites (the remnants of the revolutionaries who had failed to protect that village) as well as the group of Gogos Bakolas, a famous local militia captain. The Ottomans approached from the lower part of the village, burning and plundering along the way. When they reached the main square, the villagers counterattacked. The men of Bakolas fought bravely, enabling women and children to escape towards the mountain.
