Stones, dirt, branches
Pramanta | The wrath of the sultan
The Ottomans ceded Pramanta to Greece with the Convention of Constantinople in July 1881. It was the culmination of more than six decades of revolutionary upheavals, since the villagers had participated in the revolutions of 1821 and 1854 with no success. At the time of liberation there were approximately 2000 people living here; but their struggle for prosperity were far from over. The wealthy farmer Konstantinos Karapanos was able to purchase the entire village from its Turkish owner for the sum of 3,500 gold coins. He was a harsh master, who claimed almost half of whatever was produced here. The villagers used to say that “stones, dirt, and branches” belonged to him. Eventually, in 1889, they were able to purchase their own village from Karapanos for 4,200 gold coins.
