Unimpeded view
Agnanta | In the Shadow of the Mountains
The village was named after the ample view it offers towards the horizon. Agnanta comes from a Greek word meaning “across an open space” and is amply justified by the fact that it was possible to see who was approaching from Ioannina from a very long distance. The mountain top that dominates the community is Strongoula (2,107m.). The community is first mentioned in an Ottoman notary act from 1729. Back then it consisted of various small and relatively poor hamlets spread in a wide area, among thick forests. Eventually though they developed into a populous community that consisted exclusively of Christians. In 1881 they joined Greece and became the capital of the province of Tzoumerka.
