Waterfall twins

Katarraktis is located at an altitude of 800 meters. The village was initially called “Shoretsana” but the name was changed in 1927 in accordance with a government decision to abolish foreign or cacophonous place names. The choice was between Agia Aikaterini or Katarraktis; the former comes from the monastery of Agia Aikaterini, whose traditional stone church was built in 1827; the latter name comes from the twin waterfalls located a short distance from the village. In late October 1943 members of the 1st Mountain Division of the Wehrmacht entered the village, burned the houses and the crops, and executed eleven villagers who had not managed to escape.
